Motorcycle theft in the UK represents a persistent and significant claims cost for insurers. Despite increased awareness of security products, theft rates have remained elevated — particularly in urban areas and for high-value machines. The question for underwriters is not simply whether a policyholder has security installed, but whether the security installed meaningfully reduces theft probability.
This piece argues that existing security categorisation — and in particular the treatment of "ground anchor" as a single risk-reduction category — does not adequately capture the difference between security systems that create obstacles and security systems that eliminate attack opportunities.
The Limitation of Product-Level Assessment
Current underwriting practice typically assesses motorcycle security at the product level: does the policyholder have a disc lock, a chain, a ground anchor? Is it Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rated?
This approach works reasonably well for portable security products. A Sold Secure Diamond chain is a well-defined risk reduction measure — its resistance to attack tools is tested, standardised, and consistent regardless of how it is deployed.
Ground anchors present a more complex picture, because the security level of a ground anchor installation is not determined solely by the anchor body. It is determined by the complete system: the anchor, the chain, the padlock, and the way they are configured together.
A Sold Secure Diamond-rated anchor body connected by a mid-grade chain and a budget padlock does not provide Diamond-level protection. The system's resistance is governed by the weakest component. Yet from an underwriting perspective, if the policyholder can confirm a Diamond-rated anchor is installed, the security box is typically ticked.
This creates a gap between assessed security level and actual security level that contributes to claims that might have been prevented by a more precise security specification.
Where Conventional Ground Anchor Systems Fail in Practice
To understand why integrated systems represent a meaningful risk reduction improvement, it helps to map the attack sequence a professional motorcycle thief would follow when confronted with a conventional chain-and-anchor installation.
**Step 1: Threat assessment.** A thief approaching a chained motorcycle will first assess the accessible components. The anchor body, in most cases, is the hardest target — it is engineered specifically to resist attack and is bolted to the floor. It is therefore not the target.
**Step 2: Target selection.** The thief identifies the accessible weak point. In a conventional installation, this is most commonly the padlock shackle — the U-shaped bar that must be exposed for the padlock to function. Alternatively, it may be a chain link that can be pulled taut and presented cleanly to a cutting disc.
**Step 3: Attack.** With the weak point identified, attack time is a function of the specific component's resistance. Padlock shackles on security-grade padlocks vary significantly in their resistance to angle grinder attack. Even high-quality shackles may be defeated in under two minutes. The Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond standard — which most motorcycle ground anchors carry — specifies 90 seconds of angle grinder resistance. A thief attacking a padlock shackle rather than an anchor body is working to a completely different clock.
**Step 4: Removal.** With the weakest link defeated, the bike is free to be taken. The certified anchor body, which may be rated to resist 30 minutes or more of sustained attack, is left entirely untouched.
The logical conclusion for underwriters: a security specification that requires a certified anchor but does not address the chain and padlock components has not closed the vulnerability that professional thieves exploit.
The Integrated Approach: A Different Security Architecture
An integrated ground anchor system changes the threat model by eliminating the attack surface that conventional systems leave exposed.

The attack surface of a conventional ground anchor installation — the padlock shackle, the chain, the fixing points — does not exist in this design. A thief assessing TufLuck cannot identify a weak link to attack, because the design principle is that no weak link is accessible.
This is not simply a marginal hardening of existing components. It is the elimination of the attack surface category that accounts for the majority of successful ground-anchor-equipped theft events.
Certification: What SS105 Means for Risk Assessment
TufLuck holds Sold Secure Diamond certification under the SS105 Ground Anchors and Security Posts standard. This is a distinct certification category from the Powered Cycle Diamond standard that most motorcycle ground anchors carry.
The practical difference most relevant to risk assessment:

The SS105 standard was developed to reflect the specific demands placed on fixed security installations — products that are bolted to the floor and expected to serve as the final barrier against determined theft. The extended angle grinder resistance reflects the reality that a fixed installation is a known target that a thief can plan for and return to with better tools.

A Proposal for Underwriters: Distinguishing System Types in Security Specifications
Given the material difference in attack surface between conventional chain-and-anchor ground anchors and integrated single-unit systems, there is a reasonable case for underwriters to distinguish between the two in security specifications.
A policy condition that specifies "Sold Secure Diamond ground anchor" treats all Diamond-rated anchors equivalently, regardless of whether the installation also requires an exposed chain and padlock. A more precise specification might distinguish:
- **Conventional ground anchor** (anchor body + chain + padlock required for operation)
- **Integrated ground anchor system** (single-unit design with no external chain or exposed shackle)
The risk profile of a policyholder with an integrated system is measurably lower: the specific vulnerability exploited in the majority of theft-from-chained-motorcycle events does not exist in their installation.
This distinction costs insurers nothing to implement — it requires only a more precise security category — and could meaningfully reduce claims frequency for policyholders in higher-risk classifications.
