Sold Secure Diamond Ground Anchors: SS105 vs SS101 Explained

by Kalman Kozomos 20 Apr 2026

Sold Secure Diamond is the highest rating in Sold Secure's motorcycle and ground anchor schemes, but it's always awarded under a particular specification. For ground anchors the two that matter are SS101 (Powered Cycle, written for motorcycle locks and chains) and SS105 (Ground Anchors and Security Posts). The specification tells you what was tested, against which tools and how, so it's worth checking before you buy.

If you've shopped for motorcycle security in the UK you'll have seen the Diamond logo on disc locks, chains and anchors alike. This guide explains what sits behind it, how SS105 differs from SS101, and how to check a product's rating yourself.

What Sold Secure is

Sold Secure is a UK test house that assesses security products against published specifications and awards ratings, typically Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond, depending on the specification. Products are attacked by trained testers using defined lists of tools, and ratings are listed on the Sold Secure website. Many UK insurers refer to Sold Secure ratings in their security conditions.

SS101 vs SS105 at a glance

Sold Secure's published catalogue describes the two specifications like this:

SS101 Powered Cycle SS105 Ground Anchors and Security Posts
Written for Mechanical security systems for motorbikes: locks, chains, disc locks and similar Ground anchors and security posts: fixed installations
Levels Gold and Diamond Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond
Diamond tool lists A, B and C, plus parts of list D A, B and C in full, plus parts of lists D and S (specialist tools)
Typical products Chains, padlocks, disc locks, and anchors tested as part of a chain and lock system Floor and wall anchors and security posts tested as fixed installations

Why the specification matters for a ground anchor

A ground anchor is a fixed installation and a known target: a thief can plan for it and come back with better tools. SS105 was written for exactly that kind of product. Many ground anchors on sale in the UK are rated Diamond under the Powered Cycle category instead, often tested as part of a chain-and-lock system. That doesn't make them poor products, but the packaging rarely tells you which specification applies.

There's a second point: a certificate covers the product tested. If your anchor needs a separate chain and padlock, the security of the whole setup also depends on those parts, and on whether the padlock shackle is exposed. See TufLuck vs traditional ground anchors for more on that.

What insurers look for

Insurers set their own security conditions. Many refer to Sold Secure ratings, and some name the type of device or how the bike must be stored. If your policy mentions a ground anchor or fixed installation, check whether it specifies a category. SS105 is the Sold Secure specification written for ground anchors. Our guide to insurance approved ground anchors explains what to tell your insurer and what proof to keep.

How to check a product's certification

  1. Go to soldsecure.com and search the approved products.
  2. Check the specification: look for SS105 if you're buying a ground anchor, not just the word Diamond.
  3. Check the category name: Ground Anchors and Security Posts is not the same as Powered Cycle.
  4. If the anchor needs a chain and padlock, check their ratings too.

TufLuck's Sold Secure ratings

Bolted down, TufLuck holds Sold Secure Diamond under SS105, the Sold Secure specification for ground anchors and security posts. Used free-standing, it is also rated Sold Secure Diamond as a wheel clamp. Sold Secure's published scheme describes SS105 Diamond as tested with tool lists A, B and C in full plus parts of lists D and S (specialist tools). You can check any product's rating and category yourself at soldsecure.com.

The design also removes the attack points that usually decide how secure an anchor setup really is: once TufLuck is locked, the hidden-shackle padlock, the 25 mm locking pin, the wheel axle and the floor fixings are all inside or under the 6 mm steel body.

What independent testing found

In its TufLuck review (23 December 2025), Bennetts BikeSocial recorded a pass in all four of its attack tests: drill, sledgehammer, reciprocating saw and angle grinder, the last rated exceptional. The tester gave up on the angle grinder attack.

“Nothing is completely undefeatable, but the TufLuck comes closer than anything I’ve tested before. Once your bike’s in the TufLuck, it’s not coming out.”

John Milbank, Consumer Editor, Bennetts BikeSocial TufLuck review, 23 December 2025

Questions to ask before you buy any ground anchor

  1. Which Sold Secure specification is the Diamond rating under: Powered Cycle (SS101) or Ground Anchors and Security Posts (SS105)?
  2. Does it need a separate chain and padlock, and how are they rated?
  3. Are the padlock shackle and floor fixings covered once it's locked?
  4. Does your insurer's policy wording name a rating or category?
